‘Local Treasures: Bay Area Ceramics’ is a wonderful show now on at the Berkeley Art Center with work by eleven ceramicists, including pieces by Clayton Bailey and Wanxin Zhang that I particularly like. I had seen Zhang’s amazing life-size figures at the Richmond Art Center earlier in the year, and been moved and inspired by their power and humor. I always want to push the walls of the Berkeley Art Center further out to create a bigger space to see, and wish that visitors could experience more of Zhang’s figures together but at least this is a wonderful taster.
Last year I was very fortunate to visit Clayton Bailey’s studio with some friends and marvel at his ceramics and wondrous metal robots. If you get a chance to stop by the Berkeley Art Center, I am sure you will find pieces that speak to you and I found it very refreshing to have a show devoted to ceramics alone.
The show is on until November 18th 2012, 1275 Walnut Street, open Wednesday–Saturday from 12 noon – 5pm.
